REAL VOICE - the vocal ezine for real people

Breathing Exercise
I've had a lot of breathing questions from readers lately, so here is a
simple exercise to do just before you sing to get the breath moving and
working for you. This will work to get you relaxed before you
sing and will "start" the breath for you so that your body takes over
and does it on its own. Put one hand on your lower abdominal
muscles, right below your belly button. Breathe OUT all your air,
until you are empty. Relax the muscles below your hand and let
the air rush in without tensing anything. Do this about five or
ten times and notice if your breathing is slower and more
relaxed. If you are not more relaxed, do it again a few more
times and see if you can feel exactly where you are not relaxed.
If you can feel where you are not relaxed, touch that spot with your
hand and see if you can relax it completely as you breath in and out.
