Another Martial Arts Singing Discovery

I am making new discoveries on the still-being-developed vocal technique!  This new one is in the area of balance.  If you have not seen that documentary "XMA" that I recommended, I highly recommend that you see it, even if you have no interest in the martial arts! (Incidentally, I had no interest in martial arts before this past March, but it has made such a difference in my singing that I'm a complete nut about it now!)   While watching the documentary, I developed a hunch about balance that I have been seeing over and over again in the martial artist who have been kind enough to let me observe them.  This weekend I got a special treat from two black-belts who performed their routines in quite an interesting setting.  We hiked to the top of a mountain and sat on  rock formations at the top.  Mind you, this area was FAR FROM a flat and level surface.  These rocks were large and fairly sloped, yet the two black-belts were still able to perform all their moves, rarely loosing their footing, even when they had to leap through the air or kick as high as their heads.

So here's part of the balance discovery, but it's in the form of an experiment:  sing your favorite song while standing on one foot and see if you can make it through the whole song without wiggling around or falling over.  If you can make it through the whole song, lift one foot up and place it on the inside of your opposite knee.  Sing the song in this position and see if you can maintain your balance for the whole song.  In both of these positions, notice what happens to your breathing while you are singing this way.  (Hint:  the five different black-belt martial artists I've observed do not lose their breath at all while they are doing all of these moves, even when they are on one foot for a long time!)  Do these exercises and see what you can discover for yourself about balance.  How can you incorporate that into your singing?
Email me at info@sing-in-tune.com with your progress and good results or any questions you may have.  I'd especially like to hear from those of you that have studied martial arts!

For those of you in Canada and on the West Coast of the United States, I also have a great recommendation for some short weekend courses with one of the Aikido masters that I studied with over the summer.  If you would like more information on his courses or what he does, please let me know and I will forward you his contact and course information.  He does really great work!
