Don't
Be Afraid....
....
to sound BAD. THAT'S
RIGHT! Let it out, loud and proud!
I have noticed lately that a large crop of my young singers, usually in
middle or high school, are confronting the same issue in their
lesson. They are, in their own minds, so afraid to sound bad that
they can't let the sound out.
I am a big fan of sounding bad, so I encourage it! It is the fear
of the voice cracking, or the unwillingness to let the real voice out
just because it MIGHT sound bad that stops most singers. But
why? Are you going to suddenly burst into flames if your voice
cracks during your lesson, when the person who loves your voice the
most will be right there to hear it and take care of you?!?!?!?
Now why am I such a fan of sounding bad, given that I've dedicated my
life to sounding good? Because, as the name of this newsletter
states (which is why I named it this) YOUR REAL VOICE is the only one
that can work on technique. Trying to improve your "fake" voice
(the one you use when you are afraid that the real one might not sound
good) is IMPOSSIBLE. No voice teacher can train a
non-reality! You might get a slightly better-sounding fake voice,
but you will never get the voice of your dreams without letting the
real one out, no matter how it sounds now. The way it sound now
is temporary! Are you avoiding sounding bad for five minutes and
selling out a lifetime of sounding great? What's the worst that
could happen if you crack, and then learn to relax through it and
master it so that it doesn't crack?
So what's keeping you from really going for it? Is it that you
might crack or sound bad? How much is that hesitation costing you
in your singing? Fearless singing is worth it, so go ahead and
let it out! You just might have the voice of your dreams and not
know it!
