Exercise
of the Moment!
I have noticed a bunch of new students having the same problem and I
have finally come up with an exercise that fixes it. Try it out
and see what your results are.
The problem: a feeling of tension INSIDE the head and face from
the soft palate (the "gushy" part up at the back of the top of the
mouth) being too tense. It usually gets tense from being pulled
up too high while trying to sing mid-to-high notes, or from putting too
much effort into lifting the palate.
It usually feels like the upper back of the throat hurts a bit from
being tight, or like every muscle in your face and head is pulling into
the center of your head toward your sinuses. Not a great
feeling.
The solution: "Squoonch" is the word we have invented for this
one. It's almost like a "pucker" on steroids!
Squoonch your face up by purposely pulling all the muscles in your head
and face in toward your sinuses and hold it for about three to
five seconds, then let it GO. When you let go, let everything in
your face, inside and out fall. This is the ultimate "Duh"
feeling. You want to let everything inside your head above the
roof of your mouth just sink while your jaw drops open and your tongue
flops out of your mouth. Let that all just hang there for about
five or ten seconds and stay relaxed and heavy.
That sequence of squoonch up to get it all tense and then BIG relaxing
release has solved the problem for all of my students for the past few
weeks. Try it and let me know your results!I definitely want you
to email me if you have any questions or comments
about this article, as this can be a sticky and controversial
topic. Send any comments or questions to
info@sing-in-tune.com and I will be happy to respond.
