Who,
Me, Part 2?
The
Goofy Voodoo strikes again,
only this time we struck back to victory! Thus were the gallant
goings-on this week in creating yet another world-class singer!
Sometimes I have the best job in the world! One of my voice
students, who is about twelve, had been singing a song while trying
really hard to be quiet and sing lightly! Ah, the death of many
singers! Now I know, I am always writing about singing lightly,
but that is because most people sing too heavy or shout without
realizing they are over-doing it. Over-singing is deadly to the
voice and does nothing to produce good sound. It just produces a
lot of damage!
In this instance, my student was doing the reverse. She was
under-singing because she was afraid to be too loud!
Understandable, but still a problem. What we had to do was find
the right mix of body and breath support to really get the voice going
on its own. Her fears about being "too loud" we blocking her
body's ability to do what it needed to do, and what was in the way was
her thinking! Specifically, her thinking about being "too loud"
and being heard by the people in the next room and maybe sounding bad
was completely controlling her physical technique. Yikes!
The good news is, once we broke through her thinking and her fear about
being heard and sounding bad, she was able to really go for it, but in
the best possible way.....FREELY! Once we got her head out of the
body's way, the voice came through on its own and she sang the song
exactly the way she'd always wanted to do! She actually cried
once she got done singing it because what she heard and felt come out
of her mouth was the voice of her dreams, the way she had always
dreamed she could sing it! The freedom to sing is what creates
world-class singers. Real singing ability comes from letting the
body go and getting the head, and all its judgments and critiques out
of the way!
