What Wrong with the “Small” Voice?

Lots of my students take singing lessons because they are sure that their voice could not possibly be great because it’s not a big and loud siren of a sound.  They push their voice to get loud and then wonder why it hurts!  All this because they think NOT having a loud voice is a BAD thing.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  Whatever voice you have is perfect because it was designed with your exact body in mind, meaning it will resonate the best if you use it in the most natural and relaxed way.  Pushing hard in the throat to squeeze out that high note will not work near as well as letting the voice vibrate in the head and using the skull bones.  Barking out a low note by jamming the throat muscles won’t give you near as much good sound as relaxing and letting the voice flow off of the breastbone.  Letting your voice flow through your body will always give you more sound than you could make by forcing it out.
