Make the BRAIN Do the Work

......and the voice will follow, that is, if you allow it.  Many singers wonder how to sing fast runs that have lots of notes in them.  Students ask me, “how do I make my voice DO that?”  I say don’t make your voice do anything.  Singing very fast runs of lots of notes is much easier when you don’t try to force individual notes, or worry about getting every note exactly correct in the beginning.  I found it much easier in the beginning to just hear it and go for it.  HEARING it is the important part!  What your brain hears, it can repeat.  Not hearing it accurately will absolutely prevent you from singing it correctly.  So to sing lots of fast notes, put your attention on listening to the notes, rather than on how you sing them.  Mastery of this skill takes practice, but the practice is easier, and way more fun, if you put the attention on letting the brain hear the notes accurately, rather than trying really hard to sing it accurately.  Your brain really will take care of your voice, but you’ve got to learn to trust it.   Hear it and go for it!  Be willing to do it wrong!  Why not? You can always do it again.
