What's
This Whole Register Thing?
Well, basically it’s a big can of worms for
lots of singers, and there’s always lots of heated discussion and fruit
throwing amongst voice teachers about it during debates. I’ll
stick to the bargain-basement version for this tip. Registers can
be thought of as two different sonic areas of the voice that also
vibrate in two different areas of the body. The low register,
commonly called “chest voice” is your low notes and usually vibrates in
your chest. Place your hand on your sternum bone at the upper
front of your rib cage and sing a low note. Do you feel the bone
there in front of your lungs vibrate? That’s chest voice.
Head voice can be defined a few ways, but here’s an easy one.
Imitate a high voice, like that of a three-year old child. Notice
that the voice is a higher sound than your normal speaking voice?
Now do that same high voice with your hand on your chest. Notice
that it does not vibrate the same in your chest as the low voice
did. You might also notice that you feel the higher voice more in
your head, as though it is vibrating around in your skull bones.
That’s head voice. We will visit the registers a lot more in
upcoming tips.
