Don't
Think
of It As An "Attack."
I remember the first time my original voice
teacher said the term “attack” to me during a lesson. The LAST
thing I wanted my voice to be a part of was anything like an
attack. I’d already had years of my sisters making fun of my
voice! What my teacher was talking about is a Vocal Onset. Think
of it as the first sound you make in any phrase you sing. You
want that first sound be exactly the note you want, and not a bunch of
notes you didn’t intend to sing. I bring this up because 99% of
the singing you’ve ever heard on the radio or television does NOT
contain a clean sound on the vocal onset. Most of what you’ve
heard is something called a “scoop,” which is the singer sliding into
the sound, usually from below, and singing lots of notes they didn’t
mean to sing. Most untrained singers cannot control their
scooping! Practice beginning each phrase as cleanly as possible
by singing exactly the note you want, and not any others. This
may take a few weeks of really paying close attention to exactly what
sounds you are singing, but it’s worth the work!
