What Is
Blend?
Blend is usually considered in either choirs or duets, or any singing
activity where more than one singer is involved at a time. Many
choral directors have quite elaborate systems for developing blend in
their choruses, but the best choir I’ve ever sung in so far is actually
the one with the most minimal approach to blend.
Essentially, blend happens when all the singers use the same vowel
shape. That’s it. The best way to achieve this that I’ve
ever heard is to put the emphasis on having the most relaxed and open
vowel shape for the vowels. If you’re doing any more work than that to
blend, consider the possibility that you may get a better blend by
doing less and relaxing more.
