Why Does Vowel Shape Matter?

Vowels are all about shape!  The open space in the mouth that makes vowels is what allows the vocal tone to be heard.  The shape of the vowel is what allows the vowel to be understood.   For any vowel you want to sing, the best shape is the one that’s most relaxed.  A relaxed shape is what is most vocally healthy.  I have found over the years that the most relaxed shape for any vowel is the one that uses the least amount of muscle necessary to make the sound.  Any muscle that isn’t absolutely required to make a vowel can be relaxed and totally passive.  The work here is to sense in your face and jaw what muscles are involved in making a vowel sound.  Which ones are necessary, and which ones are just tagging along for the ride and creating extra tension?  Feel how many of those muscles you can relax and still make the sound.   The good news is, the vowel also sounds best to the listener when the mouth shape is the most relaxed.   Use the least amount of muscle possible, and the voice will sound the best!
