That “ng”
Thing
Yesterday we dealt with the tense tongue and stretched
soft-palette. A great exercise for relaxing a stuck soft-palette
is vocalizing on the “ng” sound. Think string, thing, bring,
wing. The “ing” sound without the “i” is the sound we want.
Pick any song you want that is relatively easy to sing (no challenging
portions that stress the voice) and vocalize the whole song lightly on
the “ng” sound. This exercise will help relax the soft palette by
letting it fall back down into a more neutral position. This in
turn helps relax everything around it. Do this exercise for a few
days on some easy songs and you will notice that your vocal tension
begins to relax.
