Tongue Down, Palette Up

Although tension in singing is a really broad and complex topic, here is a fast an easy way to test by feel for whether or not you are tense.  This will deal specifically with tongue tension.  Push your tongue down inside your mouth, as though it was being pulled down into your lower jaw.  Notice that when your tongue goes down, your soft palette, the soft muscles at the upper back of your mouth, move up automatically.  Not the most comfortable feeling in the world, is it?  Leave it there long enough and it will start to feel like your soft palette is tight and worn out!  Unfortunately, I hear lots of singers trying to sing in this state all the time.  This particular position causes a lot of stress in the voice.  Relax the tongue and let it come back to a more neutral position and it will be much easier to sing.  When you are singing difficult passages, check to make sure that your tongue stays in a neutral position and that the soft palette stays relaxed.  It’s much easier to sing with these two parts relaxed.
