Fly That
Kite
“Anchoring” the voice is a great concept that
has been invaluable since my original teacher first taught it to me,
and has helped me sing healthfully for many years. By anchoring
the voice, I mean aiming the vocal resonance down onto the breastbone
to keep the larynx from climbing and to balance and round out the vocal
sound. Here’s a great visual for anchoring: think of a
kite. On a day with mild wind, the kite could have a fairly small
stick stuck in the ground to keep it from flying away, but still
allowing it to flow completely with the wind. On a day with
gale-force winds, the kite would need a full-size cinderblock on the
ground to anchor the kite and keep it from blowing away. This
works in the voice by singing things in the low and middle range with a
sense of lightness. Those notes don’t need as much anchoring as
high notes, which need much more of an anchor to keep the larynx from
climbing in the throat. The higher the note is, the more
the sense of anchoring with a cinderblock by aiming down will
help balance and relax the larynx.
