Tone vs.
Size
Which is better: having a really big sound, or
having a really beautiful sound? Well, it actually depends on
what you like to listen to. Some listeners prefer to listen to
very large voices that make lots of loud sound, but others prefer to
hear a beautiful sound, no matter what the size of the voice
is. It is always better to think of this in terms of what
you want to hear, rather than trying to think about this in terms of
your own voice. Why? Because you have very little control
or input over the size of your voice. (Remember from earlier
tips: you don’t even really hear your own voice when you
sing!) You have way more input and choice over the beauty of your
voice. Some singers just naturally have large, loud voices, and
do very little to make them sound that way. Not everyone has a
big voice, but everyone can have a beautiful voice! The thing to
do is relax into your singing to make more and better sound.
Resonance is what gets the voice heard, not pushing to make more sound.
