Strength vs. Relaxation

We go back to reader questions for today’s tip.  Many singers are concerned about the “power” or “size” of their voice, particularly because they want a “stronger” or “bigger” voice.  Well, here’s the good news on that front:  that whole thing is a myth!  A voice that produces great tone with a flexible and wide range is a relaxed voice, not a forced voice.  Aiming for “power” is really misguided.  What serves the aim of power in the voice is resonance.  Physics is your friend!  Use the air and the hard surfaces to do the work.  That’s how you are designed.  If your assumption is that singing LOUDLY is somehow better than singing beautifully, think again!  The fastest way to ruin a voice permanently is to force the voice to sing overly loudly to try to make more sound or squeeze out high notes that are not relaxed.  Although there are many popular singers that yell a lot and try to make an overly large sound, that’s not technique.  That’s force and it ruins the voice FAST.  If you want to make more sound or have more tone or a wider range, go for relaxation and resonance.  A voice that isn’t working hard will always outdistance a forced voice.
