What Am I
Supposed to Feel?
No, it’s not more emotions coaching.
This time, it’s physical. I had a great question from one of you
that prompted today’s tip. The question was “what should I feel
in my neck and throat when I sing high notes?” The answer
is.....NOTHING! Although that may not be the experience you
are currently having, the way you know you are relaxed and singing high
notes, or any notes, properly, is that you are not feeling the “work”
in your neck and throat. You don’t want throat and neck
muscles to do the work, you want the AIR to do the work.
Your neck and throat are actually quite passive when you sing, or at
least that’s what you want because that’s the way you are
designed. The muscles in your neck are there to hold up the
weight of your head, allow your neck to turn and the functions involved
in swallowing. That’s pretty much it. The rest of the stuff
that your larynx does is not done with muscles that you can really
control. For the most part, you have voluntary control over the
movement of your neck and throat muscles. The “stuff” in your
larynx really works its magic without you doing anything. Try
letting your larynx work itself, without trying to help with throat
muscles, and feel what you get. You may be surprised.
