You Have
No Jaw
Today’s tip is my favorite, and
funniest, visual exercise for better singing. I use this all the
time and it never fails to get a laugh from my students. Imagine
a skeleton, or at least the upper body portions of one. There’s a
skull at the top, and because it’s my own personal skeleton, I custom
designed mine with no lower jaw. Who needs it for
singing? Now since this is a singing skeleton, it has
only one muscle in its whole body, the tongue. That’s right, my
singing skeleton is just a head with a tongue and rib cage!
Seeing this image in my mind instantly relaxes me and makes singing a
lot easier. The more I use this image while
practicing, the more I stop using muscles I don’t need. I relax
and do less work because I see in my mind the parts that really matter
for making good sound. I need the bones to resonate and the
tongue to make good diction. Other than those parts, it’s all
breathing, which I’m going to do anyway. Seeing the singing
skeleton instantly “attunes” my body without me having to struggle or
work harder at relaxing. Feel free to steal my singing skeleton!
