What Is That “Goofy Opera Singer Voice?”

One of my favorite funny things to deal with in teaching voice lessons is to distinguish “goofy opera singer voice.”  So what is it?  Think of the funny voice that men use when they imitate women speaking or singing.  It’s usually a high, flutey-sounding voice that has no “body” to it.  Why it’s important to identify this voice is that it’s not the real voice.  If you’re going to work on your voice, you’ve got to work on the real thing, even the parts of it you don’t like.  ESPECIALLY the parts you don’t like.  Why “goofy opera singer voice” matters is that most singers don’t like to crack, so if they suspect they are about to crack, they flip into the “goofy opera singer voice” to sing high notes.  Switching into a different sound to avoid cracking only avoids the problem, it doesn’t fix it.  If you want to learn how to sing without cracking, you’ve got to be willing to crack so that you can learn how to relax through it.  It’s like the boogie man under the bed;  the fear of it is always worse than the reality.  When you’ve searched for the boogie man enough, you start to realize it’s not there at all.  That’s eventually what happens with those “cracks” in the voice.  When you work on them enough, they aren’t there anymore!
