Singing with Asthma

I have noticed over time with my voice students that singers with asthma significantly benefit from learning to “breathe low.”  All of my asthmatic students that learn proper breathing and vocal support techniques have fewer asthma attacks and less frequent need for inhalers than they did before studying singing.  The reasons I have seen for this happy accident is that singers learn to breathe in a very relaxed way.  In fact, the best way to draw in air is not to “inhale,” the kind of sucking-in air that produces a gasping sound.  When my asthmatic students learn to take in air without the gasping inhale, they learn to relax and have more control over all the muscles in their torso that get tense and spasm during an asthma attack.  So if you or someone you know has asthma and wants some natural relief from it, study singing and learn to breathe low!
