How Much Air Does It Take?

Here at The Daily Tip, I’m always recommending more air in the voice.  So just how much air DOES it take to sing any particular note?  Well,  here’s the easy answer: enough air to sing the note without doing the work in your throat.  Your vocal folds will definitely let you know when you are NOT using enough air, because that’s when you feel all the work load in your throat or jaw muscles.  So how do we know when we’re using the right amount of air?  When you use the correct amount of air support in the voice, you will feel nothing in your throat.  That’s right!  NOTHING!  “But how can that be?  Shouldn’t I feel myself working in my throat?” you ask?  NO!  Absolutely not.  When you are using enough air support, your throat, meaning the muscles around your larynx, aren’t doing any work, which is the way it’s supposed to be when you sing.  If you are feeling a lot of muscles working in your throat, you aren’t using enough air support.
