Why Do I Always “Crack” There?

It’s because you’ve encountered your break!  Think of your break as your vocal earthquake fault line.  If you had to walk across a fault line, would you tiptoe across in ballet shoes, or stomp across in heavy concrete slab shoes?  (Since I live in California, I hope it’s the tiptoe!)  That’s the best way to sing through the break in the voice, that is, tiptoe across the break vocally.  Sing lightly in the areas of the voice that feel the weakest and you will find you “crack” less often, but you still will make approximately the same amount of sound and be able to hit the notes easier!  The worst thing you can do in the break is tense up your muscles and sing louder, but unfortunately, that’s what most singers do before being trained to work with and relax into the break.  If you can feel the “crack” coming on, lighten up the voice, relax and tiptoe through it.  The more you relax and breathe and lighten up, the easier it it to sing through the break.
