What the Heck Is Vibrato Anyway?

Mostly a constant source of angst and great discussion amongst singers!  Actually, vibrato is a natural phenomenon in a relaxed voice that produces a slight alteration in pitch as a note is held or a smooth phrase is sung.  Why vibrato is tricky, and a point of contention for a lot of singers is that most people think they are “supposed to” have it, so they push the voice or tense the neck and jaw to try and produce that sound.  DON’T do that!  It’s dangerous and can really do some bad stuff to the voice.  One sure sign of an unhealthy and unnatural vibrato is the chin and jaw shaking or moving around, making the voice vibrate, while a long note is held.  If you watch carefully, you will start to see this in singers that have not been properly trained.  (I’m too kind to name names here!)  Watch singers on television and see if you can catch their jaw jiggling around at the same time that their voice does.  If you see the jiggly jaw, you’ve just witnessed an unhealthy vibrato!

Since vibrato is a complex thing in singing, there will be many more tips to come that deal with it.  And, until then, be ware of the jiggly jaw!
