Sound
Comes Out the Top of Your Head
Oh, really now. Does it? No, but often
singing high notes, or using “head resonance” will produce the physical
sensations of the sound coming out of the top of the head instead of
the mouth. In reality, the sound is coming out of the mouth, but
resonance has a kookie way of showing up in the form of physical
sensations. Since we can’t accurately listen to ourselves
while singing, the only accurate barometer we have for monitoring and
adjusting our technique is checking in with how it feels. In
singing high notes, the sensation of feeling the resonance at the top
of the skull can be rather strange at first, but over time you may
begin to “look for” that same physical sensation as a way of knowing
that you hit your sweet spot with the note. So, if you do feel
various physical sensations when you resonate, use them as a guide to
producing better and easier sound. But remember, the sound still
does come out of your mouth! |
