The Mask

No, it’s not the movie I’m writing about, nor is it that thing you wear for Halloween.  But the image from “Phantom of the Opera” is a good place to start!  When I refer to the “mask” in singing,  I mean a specific area of the face and inside the skull, properly known as the “pharynx.”  See, that “mask” business is much easier to say!  The pharynx is the area of the face that the “Phantom of the Opera” mask would cover, mainly the across the front of the face from the cheek bones up to the eyebrows and including the spaces behind and inside the nose, between the eyes and the sinuses.  These are all empty spaces that allow sound waves to resonate.  The mask area is one of the best areas to aim sound while singing.  Most singers experience the mask resonance the best by humming into it.  Loosely close your lips and hum lightly.  You may notice some vibrations or other sensations in that area of the face while you are making vocal sound.  The more you learn to aim into this area, the better it will be for your voice.
