A Dog on
the Porch in August
Think sweltering August heat and humidity in
the late afternoon on a porch somewhere in the deep South. Think
big dog with a heavy coat of long hair. The dog is hot and
panting to cool down. It’s the panting we’re interested in for
singing. Think about what a hot and panting dog’s lower jaw and
tongue look like. The dog’s jaw is completely flopped open and
loose, and the tongue is hanging out of the mouth in a completely
relaxed position. THAT’s exactly what we want for singing!
A floppy jaw and completely relaxed tongue make absolutely great vocal
sound. Try this out in a mirror, and once you get through
laughing at yourself, you’ll sound great. Look into a mirror and
imitate the dropped jaw and loose, floppy tongue of a panting
dog. Once you’ve got it, make some light and easy vocal
sound. Notice how relaxed and free your singing tone is when your
jaw and tongue are relaxed and free. |
