No Pressing!

And I don’t mean I’m against ironing.  What I mean by pressing is the action of the muscles in your throat pressing your larynx (commonly known as your “voice box”) downward, or squeezing the muscles in your throat to hit a note or sing louder.  Pressing is what happens when the vocal folds, the parts in your larynx that actually make noise, don’t get as much air support as they need.  The vocal folds need a sustained amount of air flow coming up through your wind pipe to make the noise you are trying to make.  If the vocal folds don’t have enough air coming through the wind pipe, the cheap cheating way to increase the air pressure is to use the muscles in the throat to press the larynx down.  The problem is, this is just about the most dangerous way to sing, and can do great amounts of icky damage to your vocal folds and larynx.  If you feel yourself pressing your larynx down to hit a note, STOP!  Relax, take a breath and sing it again without pressing down.
