Froggy
Went a' Courtin'
Let’s talk vowels and consonants!
They’re the stuff our alphabet is made of and they can give you a big
boost in sound and ease when you learn to use them well. The
vowels are the open sounds in the voice: a, e, i, o, u and sometimes
y. Consonants are all the other letters of the alphabet, for
example, b, t, v, k to name a few. Vowels are open sounds
that make tone, and consonants are the more explosive or percussive
sounds that make our diction and language understandable. So,
here’s the froggy part: imagine a frog hopping across a
pond. The frog hits a lilly pad and immediately jumps off of it
forward through the air. The frog is only on the surface of the
lilly pad for a fraction of a second, but hits and takes off with a
very explosive jump that propels him forward through the air. The
frog is in the air for most of the time that he’s traveling across the
pond. Think of your vowels as the time that the frog is in the
air. All the grace and bloom in your sound is in the vowels,
arching through the air. The consonants are the
explosions onto and off of the lilly pad. They are short, crisp
and give direction. The more you sing like the motion of the frog
across the pond, the better you will sound.
