Breathe
Before You Have to
Planning your breathing into a song makes a
big difference in how easily you can sing it. The most important
part of the planning is to put in each breath before you need it.
If you always breathe before you are out of breath, your voice will
sound much better. This also means taking longer and slower
breaths. Don’t wait until the instant before you have to make
noise to start taking a breath. Give yourself about three full
seconds to breathe in before making a sound. This takes planning,
but it’s really worth it. Go through the words and the rhythm of
the song you want to sing and find all the places where there are
silences between the phrases of singing. In each of the silences,
put in a long slow breath that gives you time to breathe in and relax
before you have to start the sound. The more time you give
yourself to breathe, and the more places you put the long, slow breath
into the song, the easier it is to sing.
