Use the Force, Luke

But where is the force?  And I thought we weren’t supposed to force anything while singing, anyway.  True, we don’t force anything, but there is a HUGE singing advantage in understanding “the Force” in Luke Skywalker terms.  Your “life-force” or “vital energy” is the most important energy source you can use to sing.  The air makes and supports the sound, but your energy is what really fuels your singing.  If you learn to tap into it, your free yourself from work and struggle while singing.  Run in place as fast and as hard as you can for ten to fifteen seconds.  Where did you feel that body energy come from?  Even though it flowed to your legs to power the running, most of that body energy came from your torso.  The majority of your body energy is sourced from your torso and sent to the areas that you need it.  When you are singing, you need a LOT of it.  When you ran in place, you harnessed your energy and sent it where you needed it.  Now, sing something and tap into that same energy.  Let yourself feel where to get that energy and where to send it.  You may have to play with this idea to really feel it “click” in your body and your voice, but it’s really worth the effort.  Now, instead of ‘forcing” your singing, you can use “the force” for effortless singing!
