Lighten Up

That’s right, sing lighter.  Here’s why:  your vocal folds, the points of contact that actually vibrate and produce the sound when air passes through them, are only about one millimeter thick.  Look at the thickness of your thumbnail.  (Not the width across the nail surface, but the actual thickness of the nail surface.)  Teeny tiny!  That’s about the thickness of the contact surface of your vocal folds.  Run your tongue around on the inside surface of your cheek.  Feel how delicate that is?  That’s what the surfaces that vibrate together to make sound are like.  Treat them well.  Go easy on them.  Singing lightly while using enough air to make the sound, rather than banging your vocal folds together harder, is the way to make great sound and keep the voice healthy for a life time.  Treat your vocal folds well and they will take care of making great sound for you!
